HOLY CROSS RECEIVES GRANT TO DEVLEOP NEW ATHLETIC FIELDS

(San Antonio, Texas) Holy Cross of San Antonio received a grant award from the Scanlan Foundation in the amount of $20,000 in order to help develop new athletic fields.

The grant was announced at the Jan. 11 Holy Cross Pop Warner Athletic Banquet. The keynote speaker at this year's banquet was Texas State Representative of District 125 Joaquin Castro who congratulated the teams for qualifying to compete at the highest level in the Pop Warner national championships.

Councilman David Medina of District 5 expressed his congratulations to the families for their ongoing hard work and sacrifices for their children to participate in the Pop Warner program.

Among the dignitaries representing Congressman Charles Gonzalez of Congressional District 20 was Susanna Benavides.

The Holy Cross Pop Warner cheerleading junior pee wee advanced team won second place at the 2009 national championship. The football team also competed in 2009 for the national championship. Since 2000, the Holy Cross Pop Warner cheerleading and dance teams have qualified squads to compete in Florida for the national championships.

"Holy Cross is committed to making our athletic facilities available to the community through partnerships such as the one we have with the Holy Cross Pop Warner Program," said Brother Stanley Culotta, C.S.C., M.D., president of Holy Cross of San Antonio.

"The idea is to raise the necessary funds in order to expand the use of the undeveloped plot of land behind the school and to create a new girls softball field, and soccer practice field," said Brother Culotta. "Our goal is to raise $2.7 million in order to cover the cost."

Annually, 250 youth ranging from ages 5 – 16 years old participate in the youth football, cheer and dance programs on the city's west side.

Holy Cross of San Antonio is a Catholic co-education middle and high school (grades 6-12) that has been serving the west and south side community of San Antonio since 1957. The Brothers of Holy Cross founded the school as a college preparatory school steeped in tradition and education.
