Another Great Year for the Holy Cross Knights!
Athletics 2016-17
The school year of 2016-2017 was one of the most successful years in recent history at Holy Cross of San Antonio. The Athletic Program at Holy Cross has traditionally been one the most visible and successful aspects of our school community and this past year stands out as one of the best. The Holy Cross Knights in the 2016-2017 school year won 3 district championships (volleyball, softball and baseball); 4 area championships (volleyball, football, baseball and softball); 3 regional championships (volleyball, softball and football); a state semifinalist in football and a state championship appearance in volleyball, a baseball regional finalist and a state tournament final four appearance in softball.
Holy Cross made the playoffs in 6 of 8 team sports; (volleyball, football, boys and girls basketball, softball and baseball). Additionally, in individual sports the Knights qualified Maddison Flores to the regional golf tournament and Deanna Flores to the regional track meet and state track meet. The boys track team finished as the runner-up at the district track meet and was 4th in the regional meet. Boys track qualified 12 young men to the regional track meet and 10 to the state track meet where Jay Nava received the bronze medal in shot put and Thomas Bailey received the silver medal in the high jump. The girls power lifting team qualified 4 girls to the regional meet and 2 girls to the state meet where Dominique Covarrubias won the state championship in her class and set the state record in the squat and total weight lifted. The boys power lifting program produced 8 regional qualifiers, 5 state qualifiers-Adrian Flores was a state medalist in his weight class and 2 of the qualifiers were state champions-Robert Adame and Joseph Pena, who set the state record in the squat. The boys power lifting team finished as runner-up at the state meet and missed the state championship by one point.
Additionally the cheerleaders, dance team and band competed at local and national competitions and experienced success at all levels. Holy Cross also competed in boys soccer, girls soccer, tennis, golf, cross-country and bowling.
There are so many impressive numbers this year. A twelfth consecutive Softball playoff appearance and a state tournament appearance; the Baseball team won their third consecutive district championship; Volleyball won its third consecutive district championship and its second consecutive appearance at the state tournament, Football has qualified for the playoffs for the 10th time in 11 years and made its deepest run ever in the TAPPS state playoffs.
In addition to our success on the field, court, diamond or track; our athletes also completed community service projects. The football team worked at the San Antonio Food Bank sorting and packaging food items for distribution. Athletes volunteered for camps, nursing homes and work projects across San Antonio. This is a reflection of the importance of our program giving back to the community.
This success is a reflection of the commitment of our student-athletes, parents and school community. At Holy Cross we believe what Blessed Basel Moreau has taught us-“the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart.” That heart is what has led to our success in athletics.
