Building Momentum
Recapping Holy Cross’ Big Win vs Weimar
by Jacob Bermudez ('25) on September 21, 2025
The Holy Cross Knights are starting to build something. After opening the season 0-2, the Knights have now won back-to-back games, including Friday night’s 38-16 road victory over the Weimar Wildcats. It was the type of performance that showed not just flashes of potential, but the ability to execute for four quarters against a physical, grind-it-out opponent.
From the opening drive, Holy Cross made it clear they weren’t going to back down. Sophomore quarterback Rocky Orozco put the Knights on the board with a 21-yard field goal late in the first quarter, then immediately followed it up with a big strike downfield, a 55-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Crew Hudson. By the end of the opening quarter, Holy Cross had jumped out to a 9-0 lead and set the tone with explosive plays. Weimar answered in the second quarter with a short touchdown pass to bring the score to 9-6, but the Knights didn’t blink. Orozco connected with Hudson again, this time for a 54-yard touchdown, to stretch the lead back to 16-6. A late field goal by Weimar made it 16-9 at the half, leaving the Wildcats within striking distance.
The third quarter started with more fireworks. Orozco found Hudson for the duo’s third touchdown of the night, this one an 18-yard strike to push the Knights’ lead to 23-9. Weimar responded with a 43-yard touchdown run from Jerron Fisher, but Holy Cross’s defense held strong from that point forward.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Knights. A defensive safety pushed the margin to 25-16, and on the very next drive, senior running back Taylor Flores delivered the dagger, a 54-yard touchdown run that broke the game wide open. Senior ATH Julian “J.R.” Salas added the exclamation point with a 20-yard touchdown catch from Orozco, sealing a 38-16 win and giving the Knights momentum heading into the rest of the season.
Hudson stole the show, hauling in 5 catches for 137 yards and 3 touchdowns, giving the Weimar secondary problems all night. Orozco was sharp and efficient, finishing 7-of-10 for 167 yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. On the ground, Flores set the tone again with 140 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, punishing defenders every time he touched the ball. Salas added to the mix with a touchdown of his own.
Defensively, Holy Cross faced a heavy dose of the run. Weimar ran the ball 41 times for 148 yards, but the Knights never let the Wildcats control the pace. Key tackles up front, a forced interception, and a safety in the fourth quarter gave the defense the edge they needed to put the game away.
Head coach Mike Harrison credited his team’s resilience afterward: “What I was most impressed with was those guys out [Weimar], they're a great football team, undefeated, they've beaten a lot of good teams, and for us to come here to their place and have an opportunity to win a game and play as well as we did, man hats off to the kids, what an incredible effort... I’m so proud of them.”
With back-to-back wins under their belt, Holy Cross is starting to find its rhythm at the right time. Next week brings even more significance as the Knights return home for the first time this season, hosting New Braunfels Christian Academy in their district opener and Homecoming game. The stage is set for Holy Cross to keep building momentum, this time in front of their own crowd.
